Abigail looked up for the first time through the open staircase. She could see floor after floor of wooden 2x4s extending up as if reaching to heaven.
“Fred! You haven’t built a house here? You’ve built a damn hotel!! We might as well set up a concierge desk, rent out rooms, and put up ‘You Are Here’ signs so people won’t get lost!!”
“It’s not that big,” Fred laughed as he zigzagged from room to room, explaining how the 2x4s created the illusion of space. But all Abigail could do was lean against the staircase stringer and look up.
